Gems have been used as
symbols of wealth, friendship, integrity, wisdom,
ambition, and love. They have served as talismans,
object of worship, as a form of money and medicine. Wars
have been fought over gems, kingdoms overthrown, and
lands conquered over them.
Thousands of years ago,
gemstones were used in prehistoric cultures in Egypt,
Babylonia and Persia as magic amulets, worn to ward off
evil spirits or instill courage or strength to the
wearer. During the Middle Ages, the perceived mystical
powers of gemstones evolved into using them in medical
practice and became highly used in the religious ritual.
After the fall the Roman Empire, gems were associated
with the 12 signs of the Zodiac, the 12 tribes of Israel
and the 12 Apostles, even the 12 months of the year.
Only much later, in the 18th century, the concept of
birthstones came into use.
Today, gems are worn mainly
for their beauty and are chosen for aesthetic reasons,
not mythical one. Even though we may own a birthstone,
our favorites are most often based on color preferences,
colors we are attracted to and colors that we find
appear particularly attractive while we are wearing
them. Awareness of your personal colors are of utmost
importance when choosing a colored stone for oneself.
